Algebraic Equations
CAPS Senior Phase Mathematics (South Africa): Grade 8–9
8 ready-made resources for teaching Algebraic Equations, written for CAPS Senior Phase Mathematics. Slides, worksheets, mark schemes, homework, an assessment and retrieval quizzes, all with SEN-friendly scaffolding built in as standard. Below is what the topic requires and where learners usually go wrong, free to read whether or not you sign up.
Independently rechecked. These files were written to the specification from our own topic maps, then put through a separate recheck pass from the one that wrote them, which found and fixed real errors. A subject teacher has not signed them off individually, so give them your usual read before you teach from them.

Grade 8
- Solve equations by inspection (carried forward from Grade 7).
- Solve equations using algebraic processes, specifically, additive and multiplicative inverses, as a formal method, rather than by inspection alone. This is the first appearance of "balance the equation" style solving in this phase.
- Recognise when two differently-written equations express the same underlying rule or relationship.
Grade 9, in addition
- Continue solving equations by inspection and by algebraic processes (additive and multiplicative inverses).
- Solve equations using factorisation as a method: directly depending on the factorisation skills built in the Algebraic Expressions topic.
- Solve equations using the laws of exponents.
Where learners go wrong
- Treating "=" as an instruction to compute an answer rather than a statement that both sides hold equal value, leading to operations applied to only one side of the equation.
- Sign errors when moving a term across the equals sign (forgetting to apply the inverse operation correctly).
- At Grade 9, attempting to solve a quadratic-shaped equation by inspection or by the additive/multiplicative-inverse method alone, rather than recognising it needs factorisation first.
- Finding one solution to a factorised equation and stopping, rather than checking whether the equation has more than one valid solution (relevant once factorisation-based solving is introduced).
How it gets asked in the exam
"Solve for x in ...", "Solve the equation ...", "Determine the value of x that satisfies ...", "Solve by factorisation" (Grade 9).
Key vocabulary
Equation, solve, inverse operation, balance, factorisation, equivalent equations.
Assumed prior knowledge
- Algebraic expressions: expanding, simplifying, and (for Grade 9) factorising (previous topic).
- Additive inverses (Integers and Number Properties topic, Grade 8). Note: multiplicative inverses are formally taught in that topic at Grade 9, but Grade 8 equation-solving here already depends informally on the idea (e.g. "divide both sides by the coefficient" is a multiplicative-inverse operation), don't treat multiplicative inverses as entirely unmet prerequisite knowledge at Grade 8.
- Laws of exponents (Exponents, Roots and Scientific Notation topic, Grade 9).
How Speca scaffolds this topic
- A balance-scale visual for the "do the same to both sides" principle, used consistently as the running motif for this topic, mirroring the same scaffold used successfully for equation-solving elsewhere in this taxonomy.
- Provide a simple decision aid at Grade 9 ("does the equation have an x² term? → check if it factorises first; otherwise → solve directly using inverses") to reduce the cognitive load of choosing a method.
- Show every intermediate line of working in worked examples, no skipped steps, since skipped steps are a common source of lost understanding, not just lost marks.
- South African decimal convention: use a comma as the decimal separator wherever a decimal value appears (e.g.
2,5, not2.5).
