Geometric Constructions
CAPS Senior Phase Mathematics (South Africa): Grade 8–9
8 ready-made resources for teaching Geometric Constructions, written for CAPS Senior Phase Mathematics. Slides, worksheets, mark schemes, homework, an assessment and retrieval quizzes, all with SEN-friendly scaffolding built in as standard. Below is what the topic requires and where learners usually go wrong, free to read whether or not you sign up.
Independently rechecked. These files were written to the specification from our own topic maps, then put through a separate recheck pass from the one that wrote them, which found and fixed real errors. A subject teacher has not signed them off individually, so give them your usual read before you teach from them.

Grade 8
- Draw angles accurate to one degree using a protractor, for the purposes of estimation, comparison, and measurement (carried forward from Grade 7, complete by the end of Grade 8: no further extension at Grade 9).
- Construct the perpendicular bisector of a line segment, and the bisector of an angle, using compasses.
- Construct a perpendicular line at a given point on a line, and from a given point to a line.
- Construct angles of 45°, 60°, and 30° (and their multiples) using compasses only, without a protractor.
- Investigate, by construction, the sides and interior/exterior angles of triangles, the concurrency of specific line segments within a triangle, and the sides, angles, and diagonals of quadrilaterals and other polygons.
- Use a pair of compasses, ruler, and protractor to construct geometric figures accurately, for the purposes of: investigating properties, designing nets, and using designed nets to make models.
Grade 9, in addition
- Draw and/or construct geometric figures, and make models of solids, for an extended set of purposes: investigating properties (carried forward), comparing properties between figures (new), and modelling real situations from the environment (new), a shift from construction as a technique toward construction as a tool for mathematical comparison and real-world modelling.
Where learners go wrong
- Reading the wrong scale on a protractor (many protractors have two scales running in opposite directions), leading to an angle measured as its supplement.
- Confusing a perpendicular bisector (equidistant from the two endpoints of a segment) with an angle bisector (equidistant from the two arms of an angle): the compass technique looks similar for both, which is exactly why they get mixed up.
- Losing accuracy by not keeping the compass point fixed precisely, or by measuring from the wrong starting point on a ruler.
- Rubbing out or tidying away construction marks, when visible construction working is often required as evidence of method, not just the finished figure.
- At Grade 9, constructing a figure accurately but failing to draw a genuine comparison or conclusion from it when the task asks for one: treating construction as the whole task rather than a step toward an answer.
How it gets asked in the exam
"Using a ruler and protractor, construct ...", "Using compasses only, construct the perpendicular bisector of ...", "Construct the bisector of angle ...", "Measure the angle ... accurately", "Construct a net for ...", "Use your construction to compare ...", "Construct a model to represent ...".
Key vocabulary
Compass, protractor, construction, accurate, perpendicular bisector, angle bisector, concurrency, net, model, investigate, compare.
Assumed prior knowledge
- Naming angles by type: acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex, revolution (Grade 7 content, assumed secure before this topic; not itself extended at Grade 8-9).
- Naming and classifying geometric figures and solids (Geometric Figures and Solids topic).
- Confident, accurate use of a ruler.
How Speca scaffolds this topic
- A numbered step-by-step template showing exactly where to place the compass point and what width to set for each construction, paired with an explicit reminder not to erase construction marks, since they are often required as evidence of method.
- Provide a protractor-reading reference card showing both scales clearly labelled, directly addressing the most common reading error.
- For Grade 9's comparison/modelling tasks, give an explicit sentence frame ("Figure A's ___ is ___, while Figure B's ___ is ___, so ___") to scaffold the comparison step separately from the construction itself.
