Foundation tier
- Calculate the area of triangles, parallelograms, trapezia, and circles.
- Calculate the area of compound 2D shapes by breaking them into known shapes.
- Calculate the volume of cuboids, prisms, and cylinders.
- Calculate the circumference and area of a circle, including answers in terms of π.
- Convert between simple units of area and volume (e.g. cm² to m²).
- Calculate the volume and surface area of cones, spheres, and pyramids.
Higher tier, in addition
- Solve problems involving frustums and other composite 3D solids.
- Rearrange area/volume formulae to find a missing dimension in multi-step problems.
- Give answers in exact form (in terms of π) rather than rounded decimals where required.
Where students go wrong
- Using the diameter instead of the radius (or vice versa) in circle formulae.
- Splitting a compound shape into components incorrectly, causing double-counting or gaps in the area covered.
- Confusing area formulae with perimeter formulae, or volume formulae with surface area formulae.
- Incorrect unit conversion (e.g. treating cm² → m² as a factor of 100 rather than 10,000).
- Using the wrong face as the cross-section when calculating the volume of a prism.
How it gets asked in the exam
"Calculate the area/volume of...", "Work out the surface area", "Give your answer in terms of π", "Find the missing length".
Key vocabulary
Area, volume, compound shape, prism, cross-section, circumference, diameter, radius, surface area, frustum (Higher), composite solid.
Assumed prior knowledge
- Recall of basic shape area/volume formulae.
- Confident multiplication and division.
- Algebraic rearrangement (Higher).
- Unit conversion.
How Speca scaffolds this topic
- Provide a visual "shape formula reference card" as a recurring dual-coded element across every slide in this topic, since formula recall (not method) is the main barrier for many students.
- For compound shapes, explicitly model a "split and shade" technique: colour each component shape differently before calculating, one colour per calculation step.
- Give unit conversion its own dedicated, scaffolded mini-sequence (e.g. a conversion grid/table) rather than folding it silently into area/volume questions.

Three full bundles a month at no cost, no card needed. Speca can also write a resource for a topic we have not built yet, and mark a photo of a student's working against the mark scheme.
